This time of year we are thinking about staying
cool. Well, how about your Bonsai?
As they are normally outside during the frost
free period of our year, they will go though some
pretty rough times of high temperature, high humidity
and high temperature, low humidity.
What can you do to help your Bonsai through this
period of stress?
With high temperatures and high humidity your
Bonsai could possibly be exposed to foliar and
soil born diseases and fungus. As we constantly
keep telling you to watch for tell tale signs of
distress. You should be able to see these things
before the real trouble begins to affect your Bonsai.
As for example on elms there may be black leaves
or curled tips of branches. High Humidity culprits.
Remember, we must have a
potting
medium that has excellent drainage. The
downside of this porous soil is that you will
have to water more. The upside of this is that
you won’t have root rot problems.
We do learn from our mistakes. I just purchased
as beautiful flowering vine type foliage plant.
I watered it like I do my Bonsai and now all the
flowers and foliage are wilting. Why? Because the
soil mix is 100% peat
moss. This means that the
soil mix holds water for a very long time and I
have drowned the roots of the plant by watering
too much. We don’t use 100% peat moss ever
in our Bonsai
potting mixes. 50% maybe, but no
more…
If you are experiencing high temperatures and
low humidity you are confronted with different
challenges. Your foliage can become brown on the
tips from this low humidity. Your soil will dry
out even more frequently and thus you will have
to water even more to make up for this.
Here in the Dallas, Texas,
are we are experiencing this plus high winds
which makes for even more of a problem. You need
to be vigilant to these challenges and adapt
so that your Bonsai will experience only a little
stress from what Mother Nature is now dishing
out.
